Since the first cart rolled down the hill at Richards Castles Soap Box Derby in 2004 a staggering £90,000 has been raised for local charities – not bad for a community run event. The success has been down to the generosity of the drivers, local businesses and local people who flock to the hill to see the thrills of Soap Box racing.
Each year the committee vote on a theme and select a number of local charities to benefit from funds raised at the Soap Box event held every July on Hanway Common.
A record breaking £11,000.00 was donated in 2016 to eight inspiring local charitable organisations from funds raised at this summer’s Richards Castle Soap Box Derby.
The three main charities this year included Close House, Dreamcatcher Children and Orleton Youth Club, recognised for their tireless dedication and determination to improve the lives of young people.
A special presentation evening was held at Richards Castle Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd November, with representatives from the different charities in attendance to receive their cheques and speak about their charity and how the donation would be spent.
Close House is a Youth Centre in Hereford, making safe, supportive and inspiring spaces for young people, the money raised will go towards much needed improvements to the centre. Dreamcatcher is a Shropshire based charitable fund giving memorable experiences to children suffering from life threatening and chronic illnesses, the founders Ron and Dianne will use the money to help fund this year’s Santa Special for well over 200 children. Orleton Youth Club is a voluntary organisation providing positive activities for children from Orleton and villages in North Herefordshire, a valued asset in the community. The Youth Club will invest the funds in training for young leaders and an ice skating trip for its members.
In additional cheques were also presented to Richards Castle Village Hall, Ludlow Fire Service, Ludlow Air Cadets, Richards Castle All Saints Church and Richards Castle WI - who split their donation between Caring for the Clubbers, Heart Start and Oak Farm.
“The Soap Box Derby has always been about local money raised going to local causes, £11,000 is the biggest sum of money we have donated from an event taking our total to £90,000 since Soap box started in 2004 and we have our sights firmly set of breaking the £100,000 next year” commented Chairman Mr Salwey.
